GAME: Squish TYPE: Net and Wall
CYCLE: I, II, III ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate-High
TACTICS: Switching roles, thinking ahead, throwing, etc.
QEP: Passing and receiving an object, moving opponent, using available space, etc.
DESCRIPTION
Layer 1: Students are paired up, placed near a wall and given foam ball/beginner volleyball. Students designate the boundaries, serving line, rebound line, and the area the ball can bounce off from. Students practice throwing at the wall and making the partner receive the rebound. Students must do so without constant locomotion (throw the ball from where it was caught). Ball must bounce off wall and bounce after the rebound line before caught and re-thrown.
Layer 2: Students can now move. Students practice different angles of throwing the ball and making their partners move around the playing space.
Layer 3: Students now go for a point. Catching the ball is no longer allowed; students must slap/smack the ball back towards the wall using their hand. If one student smacks ball and doesn’t reach wall, it’s a point for their partner. If ball goes out of bounds, point to opponent. If the ball bounces more than once before returning, opposition receives point. Students play three games before switching to a new opponent.
MODIFICATIONS:
- Various dimensions of boundaries and space.
- Implement racket instead of slapping/smacking ball.
- Switch/rotate if teams are in pairs.
SAFETY:
- Beware of other groups; if ball travels to another court, wait until allowed.
- Opponents must move out of way of others, no contact.
- Use soft balls that can be hit and bounced easily.
