GAME: Flag Tag TYPE: Pursuit and Evade
CYCLE: II, III ACTIVITY LEVEL: High
TACTICS: Use of space, communication, teamwork, protection, attacking, etc.
QEP: Encircling opponent, cooperation, chasing, dodging, etc.
DESCRIPTION
Layer 1: Students are paired up and each given a flag. The flag must be tucked in their shorts so that majority hangs out in order for flag to be graspable. Both students face each other a metre apart and try to grab the other student’s flag. If the flag is taken, the student hands the flag back and they restart.
Layer 2: Everyone is against everyone. Students are asked to spread out in their space but must stay within the boundaries of the playing surface (usually determined by lines or cones). When teacher says, “GO” and the music starts, students try to steal other students’ flags. If a student is successful in grabbing a flag, that student drops the flag, notifies the student that they took it from, and then that person retreats the side lines to put their flag back.
Layer 3: Class is divided into four teams (blue, red, green, and yellow). The objective of the game is for each team to steal the flags off their specific opponent (blue vs red, green vs yellow). Teams discuss tactics to stealing flags before the game begins and then spread out. When the teacher says “GO” and the music starts, the same rules for flag stealing applies except that in order to get back into the game, students must do five jumping jacks.
Layer 4: Every team is against every team. Knockout rules apply; if a student loses their flag, they must go to the sidelines and wait until the game is over. Last team colour remaining is the winner.
MODIFICATIONS:
- Students have two flags.
- When flags are stolen, the student puts flag into team basket. Team with most flags wins.
- Neutral (ghost) team without flags; steal flags for any team.
SAFETY:
- Awareness of others and space.
- Careful grabbing flags.
