GAME: Giants, Wizards and Elves TYPE: Pursuit and Evade
CYCLE: I, II ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
TACTICS: Communication, decision making, run or chase, teamwork, etc.
QEP: Cooperation, position of the body, chasing, etc.
DESCRIPTION
Layer 1: Class is divided in half and are lined up one to two metres apart facing each other in the center of the playing surface. Game is very similar to Rock, Paper, Scissors. Teacher demonstrates each movement and pose – Giants: hands up and on toes; Wizards: lunge forward, arms in front, and fingers wiggly; Elves: squat and hands at ears. When teacher calls out Giants, students perform the Giants’ pose. Same is repeated for Wizards and Elves.
Layer 2: Implement a team versus team showdown. In order to win, Giants crush Elves, Wizards zap Giants, and Elves dodge Wizards. Each team forms a huddle and decides if they want to be Giants, Wizards or Elves. A team should choose at least two poses in case the first choice results in a tie with the other team. Students demonstrate their pose when teacher says “Who are we?”
Layer 3: Chase element is now implemented. In order to score a point, the winning team must chase the losing team before they reach their end line. Establish that Giants chase Elves, Wizards chase Giants, and Elves chase Wizards.
MODIFICATIONS:
- Distance between the two teams.
- Chasers can chase whoever they want.
SAFETY:
- Appropriate tagging; no pushing or hitting.
- Aware of others when running/chasing.
- Define roles for who chases often.
