GAME: Crystal Takeover TYPE: Special/Invasion
CYCLE: II,III ACTIVITY LEVEL: High
TACTICS: Defending, attacking, teamwork, communication, target shooting, etc.
QEP: Concept of space, manipulation skills, identifying roles, throwing and receiving and object, etc.
DESCRIPTION
Layer 1: Students are put into groups of six students and are placed into a zone with a ball and six hula hoops. Each student is an explorer of an island (zone) and upon arrival, has discovered that it is bountiful in crystals. Teacher demonstrates how to construct “crystal” using the hula hoops. Students pair up and toss the ball to each other in their island without going out of their boundaries (zones are surrounded by a sea/ocean). When teacher shouts, “CRYSTAL” students work together to make crystal. Students decide on a team name/country.
Layer 2: Each team is against each team. Objective is to destroy the crystals of the other team by tossing cannonballs (big balls) while at the same time protecting their own crystal. If the crystal is knocked down, students must rebuild the crystal in order to come back into play. When students are rebuilding, other teams are not allowed to throw the ball at them. Students are not allowed to move out of their zone, except for one student. This student, referred to as the ship captain, is allowed to jump on the stepping stones (bases placed outside of their zones) in order to get balls. The ship captain cannot throw the ball at the opponents’ crystal, but can pass the ball back to their own team. Students (explorers and ship captains) are not targets; if the ball hits them, they remain in play. If a student touches the ocean, they must raise their hands up, exit the zone and do ten jumping jacks before they are allowed back in the game.
Layer 3: Create a formation; three attackers and three defenders. If a student is hit with the ball and does not catch it, the player must switch roles (attacker switches to defender; defender switches to attacker). Objective is still to knock down other teams crystals. Students choose a new ship captain.
Layer 4: Explorers no longer want to destroy crystals but instead want to acquire them. If an island’s crystal is knocked down, that team cannot rebuild it. That island and team joins the team that knocked down their crystal and work together to take over the remaining crystals. The ship captains are now allowed to throw at the opponent’s crystals but must use their opposite throwing arm. The last island to have its crystal standing is the winner.
MODIFICATIONS:
- Various sized balls and zones.
- Teams can have multiple crystals.
- Implement a knockout style game play (if ball is not caught, go to the side until freed)
- Have two teams against each other; zones on sides for throwing.
SAFETY:
- Students are not the target and so ball should not be aimed for them.
- Head scanning and aware of different team members (especially ship captains)
- Use soft or pool balls to minimize velocity/power of ball.
