GAME: Lob Tennis TYPE: Net and Wall
CYCLE: I, II, III ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
TACTICS: Catching and tossing, moving opponent, positioning, etc.
QEP: Throwing/receiving an object, feinting, getting back in position, etc.
DESCRIPTION
Layer 1: Students are given a tennis ball and told to find their own space. On their own, they practice ways of tossing and manipulating the ball without locomotion.
Layer 2: Students are paired up with one tennis ball and placed in half a badminton court. Students placed four cones in the middle of their area to create a neutral zone where the ball must travel over. Tossing underhand, students must practice maintaining a rally with their partner without leaving their zone. Students count to see how many times they can catch and toss the tennis ball back to each other.
Layer 3: Students want to make the opponent move side to side using forehand. Students should constantly try to return to middle in order to be better positioned. Neutral zone can be widened or narrowed according to their preference.
Layer 4: Students are looking to make a point. Students try and toss the ball in an area where the opponent cannot catch and return the ball.
Layer 5: Implement full court game with low net separating their zones.
MODIFICATIONS:
- Switch/rotate students if teams are in pairs (Layer 5).
- Implement a racket or no catching rule.
- Students must change hands routinely when tossing.
SAFETY:
- If ball ventures in another court, wait until safe to retrieve it.
- No overhand throws; no tossing at partners.
- Stay in their zones as other groups may be around them.
